So probably we will have to spend quite some more days indoors. That does not matter, though - because we have the Swedish FIKA culture (meeting up for coffee/tea and something delicious to eat). And CIEE fikas are always a feast because our program assistant Felicia bakes the best things in the world! Wondering what this is? What, how can a sandwich be a cake, you may wonder? Well, instead of cream and butter, this cake is made of bread and mayonnaise, creme fraiche and sour cream. It is usually garnished with shrimps, eggs, smoked salmon and crudite. There are vegetarian options as well, of course. Want to make your own sandwich cake? The cake in the photo is of course homemade by our very own Felicia Johnson and tasted absolutely delicious! And of course, she treated the students to home made carrot cup cakes as well (she likes to get up early in the morning and bake..)Some more impressions from our fika dates with the students (usually at CIEE staff's houses): At Felicitas' house. On top you can see another Swedish delicacy, the so- called R. Make your own. Yummy lunch! After lunch, students had the opportunity to visit some of Stockholm's many famous museums, such as the Vasa Museum, the Nordic Museum or the Modern Art Museum. Since February 1st, many of those museums are free because the Swedish state wants everyone to have access to culture. This is definitely an opportunity for the students to go back to Stockholm and indulge in free cultural activities! Gamla Uppsala Trip. Gamla Uppsala or Old Uppsala, only a short bus ride away from our students accommodation, was on our cultural activity agenda as well in February. Gamla Uppsala is a very interesting place full of rich cultural heritage. As early as the 3rd century AD and the 4th century AD and onwards, it was an important religious, economic and political centre. Early written sources sho that already during pre- history, Gamla Uppsala was well known in Northern Europe as the residence of the Swedish kings of the legendary Yngling dynasty. You'll have plenty of education options as a registered nurse. NCLEX is a registered trademark. An associate's degree in nursing or a nursing diploma is required to practice as a registered nurse, but entry to a program. Entry into Practice: Diploma Programs for Registered Nursing. Since graduating from my diploma program many years ago. Degree Completion Programs for Registered. The baccalaureate level content missing from diploma and ADN programs is built into the front-end of the RN to MSN program. American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Research has shown the lower mortality rates, fewer medication errors and quality outcomes are all linked to nurses prepared at the baccalaureate and higher degree level. These bridge programs build on previous learning, prepare nurses for a higher level of nursing practice, and provide RNs with the education necessary to move forward in their nursing careers. RN to Master's Degree Programs. Currently, there are 2. RNs with diplomas and associate degrees to the master’s degree level (MSN, MS or Master of Science in Nursing degree). Master’s degree- prepared nurses are in high demand as expert clinicians, nurse executives, clinical educators, health policy consultants, and research assistants. Though the majority of these programs are offered in traditional classroom settings, some RN to MSN programs are offered largely online or in a blended classroom/online format. The baccalaureate level content missing from diploma and ADN programs is built into the front- end of the RN to MSN program. Mastery of this upper level basic nursing content is necessary for students to move on to graduate study. Upon completion, many programs award both the baccalaureate and master's degree. The number of RN to MSN programs has more than doubled in the past 1. Hospitals and other employers are encouraged to support nurses interested in completing these programs and strengthening their nursing practice. There is a misperception that RN to MSN programs can circumvent baccalaureate level nursing content which is not the case. In fact, the baccalaureate course work embedded in these programs must provide a sufficient bridge to graduate study in order to prepare students to complete graduate level courses and to meet the accreditation standards set by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. For nurses interested in teaching careers, RN to MSN programs can be an important first step in their education en route to doctoral preparation. AACN recognizes the doctoral degree as the appropriate and desired credential for a career as a nurse educator. Though master's level nurses with additional course work are prepared to teach in clinical capacities and entry- level nursing programs, the doctoral degree is necessary to fulfill the full nurse faculty role in senior colleges and universities and to achieve parity with faculty in the other health professions. RN to Baccalaureate Programs. RN to Baccalaureate (BSN, BS or Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs provide an efficient bridge for diploma and ADN- prepared nurses who wish to develop stronger clinical reasoning and analytical skills to advance their careers. RN to BSN programs build on initial nursing preparation with course work to enhance professional development, prepare for a broader scope of practice, and provide a better understanding of the cultural, political, economic, and social issues that affect patients and influence care delivery. These programs are growing in importance since many professional practice settings, including Magnet hospitals and academic health centers, now require or prefer the baccalaureate degree for specific nursing roles. Click here for the list of RN to Baccalaureate programs. Currently, 6. 79 RN to BSN programs are available nationwide, including more than 4. Program length varies between 1 to 2 years depending upon the school's requirements, program type and the student's previous academic achievement. Concerns about the limited availability of RN to BSN programs are unfounded. In fact, there are more RN to BSN programs available than four- year nursing programs or accelerated baccalaureate programs for non- nursing college graduates. Access to RN to BSN programs is further enhanced since many programs are offered completely online or on- site at various health care facilities. Enrollment in RN to BSN programs is increasing in response to calls for a more highly educated nursing workforce. Before enrolling in diploma and ADN programs, students are encouraged to check with school administrators to see what articulation agreements exist with baccalaureate schools and to determine which course work will be transferable. EPA is working with states and other key stakeholders to help ensure that natural gas extraction does not come at the expense of public health and the environment. The Agency's focus and obligations under the law are to provide oversight, guidance and, where appropriate, rulemaking that achieve the best possible protections for the air, water and land where Americans live, work and play. The Agency is investing in improving our scientific understanding of hydraulic fracturing, providing regulatory clarity with respect to existing laws, and using existing authorities where appropriate to enhance health and environmental safeguards. On this page: Improving our Scientific Understanding of Hydraulic Fracturing. Top of Page. Providing Regulatory Clarity and Protections against Known Risks. Although the national study should enhance our scientific knowledge, some concerns associated with overall natural gas and shale gas extraction, including hydraulic fracturing, are already well known.
These operations can result in a number of potential impacts to the environment, including. Stress on surface water and ground water supplies from the withdrawal of large volumes of water used in drilling and hydraulic fracturing; Contamination of underground sources of drinking water and surface waters resulting from spills, faulty well construction, or by other means; Adverse impacts from discharges into surface waters or from disposal into underground injection wells; and. Air pollution resulting from the release of volatile organic compounds, hazardous air pollutants, and greenhouse gases. Because natural gas development is increasing rapidly in many regions, prudent steps to reduce these impacts are essential now even as further research to understand potential risks continues. EPA is: Ensuring that hydraulic fracturing using diesel fuels is properly permitted. A core element of the Safe Drinking Water Act's (SDWA) Underground Injection Control (UIC) program is setting requirements for proper well siting, construction, and operation to minimize risks to underground sources of drinking water. The Energy Policy Act of 2. UIC program. This statutory language caused regulators and the regulated community alike to raise questions about the applicability of permitting practices. EPA has developed revised UIC Class II permitting guidance specific to oil and gas hydraulic fracturing activities using diesel fuels. The guidance outlines for EPA permit writers, where EPA is the permitting authority, (i) existing Class II requirements for diesel fuels used for hydraulic fracturing wells, and (ii) technical recommendations for permitting those wells consistently with these requirements. Top of Page. Ensuring the safe management of wastewater, stormwater, and other wastes from hydraulic fracturing activities. As the number of shale gas wells in the U. S. Wastewater associated with shale gas extraction can contain high levels of salt content also called total dissolved solidstotal dissolved solids. The quantity of dissolved material in a given volume of water. The wastewater can also contain various organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, metals, and naturally occurring radioactive materials (also referred to as technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material or TENORM). In partnership with states, EPA is examining the different management methods employed by industry to ensure that there are regulatory and permitting frameworks in place to provide safe and legal options for disposal of flowback and produced water. These options include: Underground injection of waste disposal fluids from oil and gas wells (Class II wells). In many regions of the U. 7 LPG installations The Boat Safety Scheme Essential Guide For more technical information The requirements in this chapter have been informed by, and may refer to, the following technical references, codes and regulations. Statutory Instruments. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. S., underground injection is the most common method of disposing of fluids or other substances from shale gas extraction operations. Disposal of flowback and produced water via underground injection is regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act's Underground Injection Control (UIC) program. Effluent guidelines for on- shore oil and gas extraction facilities prohibit the discharge of pollutants into surface waters, except for wastewater that is of good enough quality for use in agricultural and wildlife propagation for those onshore facilities located in the continental United States and west of the 9. However, those standards do not currently include categorical pretreatment standards for indirect discharges from onshore oil and gas extraction to municipal wastewater treatment plants (also known as publicly owned treatment works or POTWs). Where unconventional oil and gas wells were drilled in areas with limited underground injection wells, and/or there was a lack of wastewater management alternatives, it became more common for operators to look to POTWs and private wastewater treatment facilities to manage their wastewater. The regulations would address discharges of wastewater pollutants from onshore unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction facilities to POTWs. Related study of private wastewater treatment facilities. EPA is collecting data and information related to the extent to which CWT facilities accept such wastewater, available treatment technologies (and their associated costs), discharge characteristics, financial characteristics of CWT facilities, the environmental impacts of discharges from CWT facilities, and other relevant information. Stormwater discharges from oil and gas operations or transmission facilities. Under the CWA, oil and gas exploration, production, processing, or treatment operations or transmission facilities, including associated construction activities, are not required to obtain National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit coverage for stormwater discharges unless there is a reportable quantity spill or the discharge causes or contributes to a water quality violation. Use of surface impoundments (pits or ponds) for storage or disposal. In some cases, operators use surface storage tanks and pits to temporarily store hydraulic fracturing fluids for re- use or until arrangements are made for disposal. States, tribes, and some local governments have primary responsibility for adopting and implementing programs to ensure proper management of these wastes. Recycling of wastewater. Some drilling operators elect to re- use a portion of the wastewater to replace and/or supplement fresh water in formulating fracturing fluid for a future well or re- fracturing the same well. Re- use of shale gas wastewater is, in part, dependent on the levels of pollutants in the wastewater and the proximity of other fracturing sites that might re- use the wastewater. This practice has the potential to reduce discharges to treatment facilities or surface waters, minimize underground injection of wastewater and conserve water resources. Top of Page. Addressing air quality impacts associated with hydraulic fracturing activities. There have been well- documented air quality impacts in areas with active natural gas development, with increases in emissions of methane, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). EPA, the Department of the Interior, other federal agencies and states are working to better characterize and reduce these air emissions and their associated impacts. Through the Natural Gas STAR program, EPA and partner companies have identified technologies and practices that can cost- effectively reduce methane emissions from the oil and natural gas sector in the U. S. Through the Clean Construction USA program, EPA is promoting newer, more efficient technology and cleaner fuels to innovate the ways in which hydraulic fracturing equipment and vehicles reduce emissions. EPA also administers Clean Air Act regulations for oil and natural gas production, including regulations on reporting greenhouse gas emissions. Top of Page. Assuring Compliance. EPA targets enforcement to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, with an emphasis on correcting violations with significant potential harm to human health and the environment. In addition to self- directed investigations, EPA receives thousands of leads and incident reports relating to oil and gas activities that could impact air or water quality. EPA works with state and local governments to respond to incidents, encourage diligent accident prevention, and provide effective and prompt response when emergencies occur. EPA's offices around the nation (. EPA is also committed to promoting informed decision making and transparency regarding chemicals and mixtures used in hydraulic fracturing activities.
