Petting Mio, the CIEE mascot, is always a highlight! Now the spring students have been on site for almost two months!! Time flies really when you are having fun. Students are of course busy with their classes (among them the CIEE course . Since Uppsala is only a 4. Trains run every hour and now there even is a commuter train that runs every half hour. We made it to Stockholm Central Station!! The first activity on the program was a guided tour of the famous city hall, designed in 1. Ragnar . It is famous for its grand ceremonial halls and unique art pieces and is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet held on 1. December each year. It also houses offices for 2. Municipal Council. Students outside the City Hall. The guided tour makes people hungry of course. This is why we visited the famous food halls . Here you can shop a variety of different foods, drink delicious coffee and have a bite at one of the many restaurants in the hall. We definitely indulged in the Saluhall's food choices!! On top you can see another Swedish delicacy, the so- called R. Make your own. Yummy lunch! After lunch, students had the opportunity to visit some of Stockholm's many famous museums, such as the Vasa Museum, the Nordic Museum or the Modern Art Museum. Since February 1st, many of those museums are free because the Swedish state wants everyone to have access to culture. This is definitely an opportunity for the students to go back to Stockholm and indulge in free cultural activities! Gamla Uppsala Trip. Gamla Uppsala or Old Uppsala, only a short bus ride away from our students accommodation, was on our cultural activity agenda as well in February. Gamla Uppsala is a very interesting place full of rich cultural heritage. As early as the 3rd century AD and the 4th century AD and onwards, it was an important religious, economic and political centre. Early written sources sho that already during pre- history, Gamla Uppsala was well known in Northern Europe as the residence of the Swedish kings of the legendary Yngling dynasty. In fact, the oldest Scandinavian sources, such as Ynglingatal, the Westrogothic Law and the Gutasaga talk of the king of Sweden as the . Many of the artefacts found in the area are displayed in the Old Uppsala Museum. We got a guided tour of the museum as well as the outside areas. At the museum. Gamla Uppsala surroundings. This picture shows how this place fascinatingly combines different historical periods. To the right is the church, which stands for Christianty and the importance of Uppsala as the religious center of Sweden (up until today it is the seat of the Swedish Archbishop). The pope came to speak at Gamla Uppsala in the 8. On the left, one can see one of the famous grave mounds from pre- christian times. Uppsala and Stockholm are fascinating places to discover with regards to history and culture, and the cities are surrounding by beautiful landscapes ready to be discovered by our students! In the upcoming months, we have planned a theatre visit, a day trip to a moose part and an old silver mine, an archipelago cruise to a famous castle, an overnight trip to the island of Gotland and much more!
